A New York City Street Map Reference Guide From A Native New York Cabbie From Queens

Why anyone would anyone want, need or desire a New York City Street Map?

The silly assumption on my part was that I think like an idiot cab driver from Queens.

A NYC street map is not something I would use.

However, it would seem there are lots of folks, who are not from around here, who have this frivolous notion that they would like to know where the bleep they are either heading towards or coming from on a New York City Street Map.

Folks on holiday or vacation, conventioneers, seminar, conference, symposium, workshop and study group attendees. Day trippers, students, families, singles, seniors and disabled people.

In this age of Google, Everyone wants their own perceptual NYC street map and they want it NOW!

The New York City Street Map Is Not The Territory

“The map is not the territory.” is quote from the Polish-American scientist and philosopher Alfred Korzybski.

A visitors concept of New York City or reaction to it, has been formed by television, movies, newspapers, magazines and books.

It’s all “Sex In the City”, “Seinfeld”, “The Today Show”, “Martha Stewart”, “Daily Show”, “David Letterman”, “NYPD Blue”, “The Godfather”, “King of Queens”, “Everybody Loves Raymond”, “The New York Times” or whatever you happen to read, watch or listen to where you live.

All I’m suggesting is that you can not and will not know everything about this place by looking at a New York City street map.

I would encourage you to Pay Attention to your environment.

What you may or may not observe on any New York City street map is both the best and the worst of human nature, in abundance.

The buildings and New York shopping are impressive but there is not a detailed map of Manhattan NY that comes close to the catalog of humanity that you will directly experience with your own eyes.

If you want to purchase a NYC street map for yourself go to the New York Bookstores page and check out the Strand Book Store for some really good maps and guide books.

Here is a helpful hint to get directions quick and fast the old fashioned way:

If you are curious to figure out who the New Yorkers are who live or work here on a full or part time basis observe the people who appear either extremely exhausted, angry, in a hurry and have wires coming out of their ears or in some combination there of.

Sample Conversation:

You: “Excuse me, can I ask you a question?”

NY’er: “What? (Pulls earphone out of one ear because they can’t hear you)

You: “Can I ask you a question?”

NY’er: “Wassup?”

You: "Which direction is the Empire state Building, Time Square & The Statue of Liberty?”

NY’er: “That way.” (points or grunts in the direction you need to go)

Bingo!!!

My Neighborhood Statistics lets New York City residents know how City agencies are doing in their neighborhood.

Mayor Mike “Moneybags" Bloomberg in his considerable efforts to run the City of New York as a business, has helped to create and design a whole bunch of reports, statistics and maps, for the convenience of all the Joe & Jane Sixpacks, who are neither billionaires or business people.

Remember there are lies, damn lies and statistics.
