New York City Record Stores

As some one who grew up browsing the stacks of New York City Record Stores as a kid. It is with a particular sadness that I find these places on the short list of endangered business species. Even the big boys like Tower and Virgin have pulled up stakes. Due to the stupidly high cost of real estate in Manhattan. What’s left are the mom and pop businesses of the “High Fidelity” variety. Where the passion for music rules.

According to my music industry source, who for the sake of privacy, we will call Mr. DaVinci Turtle, there are 2 types of music consumers. There are the Active buyers, who will search New York City Record Stores "on a mission from God." They buy and consume massive amounts on a regular basis. They may or may not have a particular musical niche. However, their quest is like an insatiable appetite for illegal drugs, illicit sex, and cheap luxuries.

Perhaps you know someone like this?

As Mr. Rogers would say, “Sure you do boys and girls.”

On the hand, perhaps you fit the profile of the Passive Music buyer. You know it when you see it. More intuitive. Your emotions, & your money guide your particular purchasing strategy. You may or may not be persuaded by the gaudy, sensational, trendy, hollow, superficial,charmless...soulless...and slick.

After talking with and interviewing other “music industry “ types I have come up with a laundry list of old school New & Used Record Stores for your amusement, entertainment, and buying pleasure.
